Christopher Columbus
In the 1400s, Europeans wanted riches from the east Indies. Christopher Columbus believed the earth was round so he could reach the east by sailing west. He repetitively coaxed the king and queen to give him three ships to sail in the sea of darkness. The people thought the sea was too wide to cross or he would be eerily eaten by sea monsters. On October 12, 1952, the sailors spotted land. When they were ashore, men very different from Europeans emerged from the bushes. Columbus called them Indians and thought he was in the Indies. He had reached a place Europeans knew nothing about-the Americas.
