The Boston Tea Party
In 1773, the Boston Harbor was crowded with colonist. Ten-year-old Paul was one of them. He was there because his older brother, who belonged to the Son of Liberty, declared something really exciting was going to happen. He knew it had something to do with the tea on the ships. He was eager to find out.
Paul thought about what his father had claimed. Colonist were furiously refusing to buy tea because England putting tax on it. They did not believe England had the right to tax them. The British coaxed England to take it back. But the Royal Governor of Boston , who was in charge, would not let the ship sail back to England. He said the Kings orders must be obeyed, and the tea must be unloaded by December 16. That was tonight.
Suddenly, the crowd began to stir. Then about one-hundred "Indians" cut through. They were carrying axes. Paul was appalled. As they passed Paul saw they weren't really Indians at all. They were the Sons of Liberty, who were dressed like Indians, had their faces were rubbed with soot and and painted with red and blue stripes. They finally reached the ship and started chopping open boxes because they didn't want to pay taxes. The crowd watched as smashed boxes fell into the ocean. The crowd began to cheer and chant "Rally Indians". The Sons of Liberty said " Bring your axes, Tell King George we'll pay no taxes. Paul knew King George would understand this message.
